ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT / Preliminary Environmental Review (EIA/PER)
Federal and local legislation requires a formal assessment of the possible positive or negative impacts that a proposed development or project may have on the environment prior to commencing the project.
An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a comprehensive study that identifies a comprehensive set of parameters including biodiversity, air, noise and water pollution, geotechnical risks, public safety, traffic and hazardous substance issues etc. and discloses possible positive or negative impact that a proposed project may have on the environment. However a Preliminary Environmental Review (PER) is conducted for small to medium sized facility having low potential environmental impacts. It is conducted relatively early in the design process in order to inform study decision-making and the level of environmental clearance that may ultimately be required.
An EIA can result in:
- Better environmental planning and project design
- Minimization of risks and impacts on the environment
- Avoid associated costs of remedial action or compensation for damage
- Ensure compliance with environmental standards and regulations
- Reduce time and costs associated with approvals of development applications.

Environmental & Social Baseline Studies
Baseline studies are required to establish an environmental benchmark against which future change may be measured. This type of study helps in suggesting future strategy to comply with the regulatory requirements and to form a basis for any developing project. These studies often involve measurement of physical, chemical, biological and social parameters.
EMC has expertise of conducting Baseline Studies in the following to be determined areas:
- Meteorology
- Geology & Geomorphology
- Hydrology & Hydrogeology
- Ecological Studies
- Social Environment
EMC also has expertise in GIS Mapping including ground-trothing and image interpretation. This coupled with our skills in participatory needs analysis plus social and environmental appraisal means we are ideally equipped to advice on numerous aspects concerning health, education agriculture and community participation and environmental education.
